With Friends Like These -or- Our Favorite Albums of 2014 [Exclusive]

friendslikethese copy

3 1/2 years ago I was sitting in a lonely hotel room in Biloxi, Mississippi that served as my home for 6 weeks during the hot summer of 2011.  I had just finished releasing my first book/music compilation project, Children of Mercy: Tales and Teachings From the World of Independent Music.  In a interview for College Magazine about the project, I was asked the stock question:  “So what is next?”.  It was then that I really had no damn clue what was next.  I had written my first album review just over 3 years prior to this time, and had hundreds more to my credit since then, so I thought I might just stay on that road.  But, then I realized that I might like to step out a bit.  Actually, I might have liked to stay on the same track, yet slightly askew.  And somewhere between a sea of cheap Kentucky bred vodka, the mourning of a dear friend who had passed, far too much Taco Bell for one person to digest in a single day, and a cheesy SyFy movie about a genetically mutated alligator starring 80’s pop stars…..  I decided it was time to branch out on my own and take the obvious step forward.  So, I began Trainwreck’d Society.

Now here we are all these years later.  I’ve been around the globe since those tyrannical 6 weeks in that legendary Biloxi hotel room.  And Trainwreck’d has followed me every step of the way.  From Spokane, Washington to South Korea and eventually to my current location in the souther region of Spain.  And that’s not even mentioning writings and configuring that took place in Seattle, San Francisco, Sausalito, Redding, St. Louis, Omaha, Moses Lake, Lisbon, Tokyo, Longview, Kelso, etc.  Yes, this site has been as much a part of me as the air and pollution that I breathe.  I have loved and hated this site with passions that are hard to convey.  But, as we approach the end of an era, I can proudly say that I wouldn’t change a God damned thing about this site and all of the wonderful things we have done.

And this post right here is one of the reasons I have continued this labor of love and loathing for so long.  It’s always been about the people surrounding the site.  It is the friends of Trainwreck’d that truly make it what it is.  I am not naive enough to think that we have had any sort of success (as mild as it may be) without the help from the beautiful people we have showcased over the last few years.  They make this shit happen, and I will be forever grateful.

So, with that sob story thrown out there and out of the way, please enjoy the final installment of our “With Friends Like These -or- Our Favorite Albums of 201X”.  There are some new faces in the crowd this year, and we are so happy to have some new friends on board.  And as per usual, there are some veterans of the site on board as well.  This is without a doubt the year with the most active participants we have ever had for this annual post.  I think it is a brilliant way to go out; surrounded by those we love.  So please ENJOY!

If you haven’t figured it out, we are making plans to close up shop.  The final Trainwreck’d Society post will happen on July 4th 2015, our 4 year anniversary.  Sort of like a presidential term, right?  Our reign must eventually come to a close.  It has truly been a joy to serve you fine reader(s).  Thank you all, from the bottom of my wine soaked heart.  – Ron Trembath

Trainwreck’d Society’s Top 37 1/2 Albums of 2014 [Exclusive]

TW2014_copy

Original art by Ava Trembath, age 9

The years just seem to fly by a little too damn quick, don’t they?  Each December I find myself thinking, “Wow, it’s end of year list time already?”.  It never ceases to amaze me how quickly a single year can pass before I even realize it.  And it also never ceases to amaze me just how much great music I manage to get my greedy little hands on.  Some of the wonderful artists I have gotten to know over the years, if only digitally, have turned out to be some pretty amazing folks who I am honored to even just have a few “1’s” and “0’s” that make up a digital conversation with them.  And each and every year somebody the list just grows longer as I discover new amazing artists that make their way into the usual lineup here at Trainwreck’d Society (this year’s #1 and #2 spots are  prime examples!).

2014 was a great year for music (I know, I say that every year).  It was a brilliant blend of indie rock sensations, wonderful crafted hip hop lyricists, old favorites, revisited classics, and so much more.  As I mentioned in our Top 40 Songs of 2014, it would behoove me to disclaim that Trainwreck’d Society took a bit of detour (a “derailment” if you will) from the music scene, and steered harder towards the world of film.  While we always claim to be an “entertainment blog” to justify such madness, it’s no secret that we started mostly as a place to highlight some of the finest acts in independent music.  And although we managed to branch out into the “mainstream” more and more each year, the heart of Trainwreck’d Society will always be with the sweet children of mercy from the world of independent music.

So, with all that being said and done, let’s get to the list!  Thank you to all the fine reader(s) out there, and to the wonderful folks featured on this list that made our ears happy throughout 2014.  Enjoy!

Trainwreck’d Society’s Top 40 Songs of 2014 [Exclusive]

2014Another year has come, and soon it shall be gone.  2014 was probably the least music heavy as far as material featured on the site, but we definitely had some of the best albums and acts featured right here in these digital pages.  And that is not to say that we weren’t listening to some really great stuff throughout the year as we worked tirelessly on interviewing more screenwriters rather than singer/songwriters.  Oh, we were listening.  With that, it might be a good time to apologize to all PR folks who might have thought they were being ignored, and suddenly a client shows up on this list without ever having been spotted on the site.  Apologies, but we were listening!  Same goes for the artists who made this list who have created the brilliant soundtrack to another wonderful year.

As per usual, lots of returning folks have made the cut once again, as it seems as though we have a fondness for some of the most hard working musicians in the business.  And while we may have set a personal record for most Top 40-esque artists in one of our lists, we still feel as though our heart is with the independent folks out there giving it all they got in a world of free streaming and mindless downloading.  Not to mention the fact that this was an amazing year for independent hip hop.  While our typical motif of showcasing sappy singer/songwriter material is definitely in place, 2014 was definitely a year for the lyricist.

Basically, as in all the years past, we have a great list of scattered, different, yet all brilliant, list of beautiful songs from some pretty amazing people.  And as always, this list is not all inclusive.  We just had to pick 40 out of hundreds to choose from, and this is what we came up with.  Enjoy!

Note: Artist and Song Titles that are highlighted will provide a link to any previous posts on our site featuring said artist. Enjoy!

10 (more) Great Indie Rock Songs For Kids Under 10 (and one 90’s R&B track for good measure) [Exclusive]

girlsA few months ago I posted our first session of 10 Great Indie Rock Songs For Kids Under 10 with an immense of pride in my beautiful three little daughters.  They had become immersed in some really good tunes during the time that I was away in the Land of the Morning Calm thanks to my lovely wife. But, alas, we went and “fucked it all away” as one track on the following list might state.  Where did we go wrong?  Well, a little film from the small and minute company known as “Disney” but out yet another one of their silly little animated movies.  It was called Frozen.  And it soon took over our motherfucking lives with a steel reprimand hoisted above the once high heads we were once holding so high in pride for the coolness we thought we had instilled upon our children.

I would soon learn about some sort of “Let It Go” video craze, in which parents would film their kids singing this damn song from the movie (maybe, you have heard it?  You know, if you have ears and basic cable?).  It became phenomenon.  Awards were one, the creators were praised, College Humor dissed, blah, blah blah.  Hell, I certainly could have uploaded several versions of the videos myself if I were so self inclined.  The girls just would not stop singing these goddamned songs.  Yet I could not bring myself to act upon such types of douchebaggery.  Even though, as some of you know, I am all about exploiting the cuteness of my kids for a few hundred page views (this post being simple proof), but even I could not bring myself to gravitate towards such hapless and classless measures.  I began to instantly regret the trip to Vancouver we took to watch this ridiculous movie at a comfortable Cinetopia.

But, alas, we are trying to regain our daughter’s coolness.  Although, just recently Frozen was released on home video, so the efforts might be stalled.  But, alas, we are still trying.  I have recently introduced my youngest daughter to the beauty of Bob Dylan, and she seems to be taking a liking to it.  Many of the other tracks on here are one’s they have loved, have learned to love, so on and so on.  Some of them are disputably “indie”, but I am not getting into that argument over some songs that are good for kids.  Besides, it is a long slow recovery from the addiction of Demi Lovato and Disney movies.  But we are slowly helping them back towards the road to recovery.  Even if that means letting them enjoy a few Mumford and Sons songs.  So, here I present to you 10 more great indie rock songs for kids under 10.  And yeah, in the event of their recovery, and current relapse, I decided I would introduce a song that was absolutely the bee’s freaking knees when I was 9 years old.  Which is not a even a rock song at all, but a stellar 90’s stylized R&B song that I think history will someday show as a brilliant addition to the world of music.

So, I offer up these next few songs up to all of those who may be willing to take up arms against the devilishly catchy tunes that bullshit pop stars and the Disney corporation may try to infest upon the world.  And also as an apology to all of those who have managed to keep their kids successfully cool for all of these years.  Please show me the ways.  With that being said, please enjoy 10 (More) Great Indie Rock Songs For Kids Under 10 ( and one 90’s R&B track for good measure).

Note:  The tracks that are Bob Dylan covers were by chosen at random by me because I thought they sounded cool and did cool covers.  It was the original versions of the songs from Blood on the Tracks that made my daughter happy.  I just felt this might bring me some sort of salvation.  Alright, enjoy!

Tom Russell – Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts (Bob Dylan cover)

Jonathan David – If You See Her Say Hello (Bob Dylan cover)

Twin Forks – Back To You

The Weepies – Gotta Have You

The Shins – New Slang

Mumford and Sons – Broken Crown

The Lumineers – Stubborn Love

Sea Wolf – Middle Distance Runner

Of Monsters and Men – Your Bones

And for a bit of good measure, I’ve also turned my kids onto this classic gem of a track:

Soul For Real – Candy Rain

The Renault Tapes Vol. 1 [Exclusive!]

RenaultAs some of you know, I recently moved to southern Spain.  It has been a great transition, and I am finding pros and cons to European lifestyles versus American lifestyles.  Pros and cons may not be the best choice of words, but it’s all I can think of right now.  In fact, all of the cons could probably be resolved if my Spanish were better than it is.  Sure they tax and fee the shit out of everything around here, but the States have that problem as well.  They have to pay for things like somehow as well.  On the other hand, traffic circles are an absolute delight!  Step your game up America, lose the damn stoplights!

Another wonderful thing about Europe that I absolutely adore is their consistent use of very small cars.  I’m not sure if it is the smaller, older roads or the fact that, much like their meals, Europeans don’t seem to have a “bigger is better” attitude.  I have seen large families, mine included, pile of tiny little Renaults and Peugeot with ease.  Whereas in the states, having one two kids seems to make people feel as though a giant gas guzzling Yukon is a necessity.  I am guilty of this as well.  But around here, that big ass Yukon is going to do nothing but give you a headache.  The roads are crazy narrow, and your never going to find a place to park that big beast.  You’d better enjoy those flip down DVD players, because you are going to be watching The Smurfs 2 about a dozen times before you find a place to park on these streets.

And with that, I joined the European ways and means.  I recently purchase a 2000 Renault Clio.  And it is freaking adorable.  It is a pretty common car, much like a Honda Accord in any lower middle class town in the U.S (I had one of those too).  I really only drive this car in short doses.  Twenty bucks in gas will last me a whole month, which is amazing to do these days.  And it has one other great amenity – a cassette tape deck.  I was not deterred by the tape deck, not even from the first time I saw these wonderful little car.  I thought of it as an adventure.  I knew I still had cassette tapes, and thought of this as a chance to bring those old things out again.  I’ve always kept a tape deck in my home, as I refuse to completely let go of this great and practically extinct technology.

And with that, I have been enjoying this profound change.  In an age when we can manage to listen to whatever we want at any given moment, it is strange to know that if I really didn’t want to listen to the song that is currently playing, it will take longer than a half a second and a few thumb taps or pushing a button on my steering wheel to change the song.  And this has led me to digging deeper into a Side 2 of a cassette tape than I ever did in the past.  Other great thing about this new found way of living, is that all of these cassette tapes tell a story.  The “newest” cassette tape in this collection is 15 years old, so there is obviously going to be some history involved in holding on to anything so long.

So, I thought it would be fun to share a few of the cassette tapes I have been digging into since I was united with my amazing new (to me) car, and see what tales they have to tell.  Let us begin.

IMG_3162Bob Dylan – Blood On The Tracks

I am certain that I will never forget this one, although I am not certain how I came across it.  Aside from being just an amazing collection of songs in general, this actual cassette tape has some great history, which actually has to do with another car.  It was my first car, a 1987 Honda Accord.  I adored that car as well.  It wasn’t the coolest car in town, as I said before it was pretty common.  But it was mine!  I was 16 years old with a car and a job!  And coincidently I also had a girlfriend that lived about 20-30 miles away in a different hick town.  I will never forget listening “Tangled Up In Blue” and “Shelter From the Storm” while driving the 20-30 miles just for 10-20 minute make out and heavy petting sessions.  I have much fonder memories in this car, but that is a whole other story.  I simply remember that first week of getting the car, and making those trips with Bobby singing in my ear even though I was strictly forbidden to drive so far away from home.  I was such a rebellious little shit.  Sorry Mom!

IMG_3159

Mr. Big – Lean Into It

No matter your thoughts on a band like Mr. Big, this is a very important one to me.  This one was given to me with love, and few other Meat Loaf and Whitesnake tapes, by my dearly recently departed grandmother.  She was one of the most amazing women in the world.  She was kind, sweet, loving….. and had a crazy taste in music.  Sure, she enjoyed some of the typical old lady music like Elvis or Liberace. But, she love to rock out.  I will always remember and treasure the times we spent in her car listening to Meat Loaf, Nirvana, and Whitesnake.  To this day, when I look at the McDonalds in my hometown and think of the times we spent in the parking lot throwing french fries out the window to the birds, I can’t help but smile.  Sure Mr. Big sucks, but with memories like this, “To Be With You” is always going a classic.

IMG_3167

George Carlin – A Place For My Stuff

I honestly have no idea how I came across this one.  But, I am damn happy that I did.  George Carlin was one of the funniest people on the planet.  His raunchy sense of humor is just as compelling and hilarious today as it was 40 years ago.  I will always remember those awesome times spent with my Dad listening to Carlin’s stand up at a young age, and being absolutely awed by such vulgar language, and hilarious tales.  His profiles of things in life that should be common sense to most people, but sadly isn’t, was a philosophy in itself.

IMG_3168

Soul For Real – Candy Rain

This one actually isn’t mine.  This one belonged to my wife, who probably has no idea where she got it, or gives a damn about any memories it may hold.  This is because she is not a weirdo like me who could probably make my own mix tape of the background to my life.  I did, however, have this album on CD, way back in 1994.  I was 9 years old, and completely obsessed with the popular R&B of the time.  This was one of the first albums I ever received.  I remember opening it on Christmas Eve, as well as the amazingly technologically advanced 5 disc CD Player that was the size of an average record player.  I was a huge fan of the likes of Soul 4 Real, Boyz II Men, All-4-One, Michael Jackson, Brandy, so on, and so on.  This album actually sucks a lot of butt, but it still reminds of me of all those time belting out “I’ll Make Love To You” in my room alone, not knowing what the hell all of these songs were talking about.

IMG_3169The Gadjits – Outsider/Bad Gadjit sampler

Oh sweet shit of christ, this one.  I only recently re-discovered this one.  My father actually mailed it to me when he found it in a old CD/Cassette player he hadn’t used in years.  I got this little free demo cassette tape when I was 14 at the very first concert I ever attended (semi) alone.  The Gadjits were a short lived ska-punk band from Kansas City that you have every right to have never heard of.  They were great though, and in this instance they were opening for the great and legendary Reel Big Fish.  It was an amazing that I will never forget.  I remember The Gadjits sitting in the lobby of The Met (now The Bing Crosby Theater) in Spokane and I couldn’t believe that people were walking right passed them like they were nothing.  They had just performed in front of hundreds of people, and nobody seemed to care!  I took my chance to talk to a real rockstar and picked up this sampling of their yet to be released album Wish We Never Met.  And thus, the birth of my hipster self was born.  I remember taking this cassette back to my hometown filled with a bunch of friends with little to no internet who had never heard of these guys, and I thought I was so damn cool.  Eventually the dawn of mass information, and the end of ska-punks thriving popularity came and I just moved on.  It is ironic though that the first “demo” I ever received still manages to be in my possession, even after hundreds of others have come and gone, lost to pawn shops across the state of Washington most likely.  Another fun fact about the show in which I picked this thing up, can be found in my post, Sophia Meets Mr. Marshmallow Man -or- An Afternoon with Newt Gingrich.

IMG_3163

Kenny Rogers – Eyes That See In The Dark

IMG_3164

Wille Nelson – Yours Always

IMG_3165

Loretta Lynn – I Remember Patsy

IMG_3166

Loretta & Conway – Loretta & Conway

I group these four together because they all symbolize the same thing.  Not just a thing, a person.  And not just a person, another truly wonderful human being.  These four cassette tapes belonged to my wife’s departed grandmother, who was like a grandmother to me as well.  Hell, her whole persona was that of an amazing grandmother, and all around beautiful person.  When she passed away, and the dividing of her possessions had to be done, I was passed along these fine cassettes that nobody else was going to want.  But, I was happy to hold on to them.  There was silverware, jewelry, what have you to be divide up evenly of course, but I wanted to hold on to the music.  As I mentioned before, music is a very important part of my life.  When I hear Willie Nelson’s “City of New Orleans” coming through the stereo from this tape, I’m not just hearing an old crybaby hillbilly doing his thing, I am hearing memories.  I try to imagine what exactly Grandma was doing when she was listening to this music.  I also thing of my wife’s also departed grandfather, her husband, who was a saint as well.  I imagine the two of them in their RV, fleeing to Arizona to escape the frigid temperatures up north, hands locked together, whistling, and staring at the open road.  And all the while, Loretta Lynn & Conway Twitty or teaming up on “You Know I Wouldn’t Lie”.  And that is just perfect to me.

IMG_3161

Toto – Rockmaker

There really isn’t much to say about this one.  I just love me some motherfuckin’ Toto!

If you feel so obliged, leave some comments telling us some of your experiences with cassette tapes.  Do you still use them?  What are some memories you have from the day and age of this brilliant technological advancement?

P.S.  Toto disses will be removed.  Toto was great and you know it.

Trainwreck’d Society’s 2014 Oscar Preview with Chris & Ron [Exclusive]

Ron&Chris

Ron & Chris circa 2011, signing a hefty stack of Children of Mercy whilst drinking fine Georgia Moon corn whiskey in Vancouver, Washington. Photo by Jill Keller.

So it is that time of year again!  The Oscars are tomorrow!  Yes, I know the Oscars are not the hippest awards show there is.  It would probably be way cooler of us to preview the Sundance Film Festival, Cannes, or the Independent Spirit Awards.  Which, I agree, usually portray way better films.  But, ever since I was a young lad, I fell in love with the Oscars.  I remember beaming like an idiot when Quentin Tarantino accepted his first Oscar, beating out the mainstream highlighted Forrest Gump.  Although I am not hipster-ish to not enjoy Forrest Gump, even as a 9 year old boy I understood that Pulp Ficiton was much better written than Forrest Gump, or just a better story line in general.  And then there came the burst of the independent films breaking their way in to the awards show.  I was 13 when two young and hardly known actors known as Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, now known as Jason Bourne and Batman, took home a couple of trophies for the still brilliant film Good Will Hunting.  I was amazed to see a wonderful indie drama win, and still loved seeing Jack Nicholson win for the mainstream delight of a film As Good As It Gets.  I felt as though the Oscars were, and sometimes still are, a versatile award showing that I simply adore.

And with that in mind, as we did last year, I invited my dear friend and screenwriter/filmmaker/DP, practically anything, Chris Eaves to help make some predictions on who we would like to see win, and who we think will actually win.  Chris has been working in the Portland cinema world for a few years now with the illustrious crew known as Sound Skript Entertainment.  They have created some wonderful short films, web series, and even full on productions.  They are a wonderful crew of folks, and I highly recommend you check them out.  Chris and I have a lot in common when it comes to film going.  We both love the Criterion Collection (he is a bit more obsessive than I), anything from the 90’s, guys like Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, Woody Allen (I a bit more obsessive than he), and so on.  Yet we also disagree on several things, which you will clearly see in the text below when discussing what I considered to be an abortion, he a masterpiece, the film Gravity.

And to make things just a bit more fun, we are having a contest via Facebook!  Head on over to the Trainwreck’d Society Facebook Page to find out about the contest, and how you can win some free swag just be participating!  Seriously, all you have to do is pick a side, and be the name drawn from the hat.  Check out how things went down last year for some more research.

Enjoy!

Best Motion Picture of the Year

…And the nominees are:

The Wolf of Wall Street

American Hustle

Nebraska

Captain Phillips

Philomena

Dallas Buyers Club

12 Years A Slave

Graviy

Her

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Her.  I thoroughly enjoyed this beautifully written film so damn much.  But, I have a feeling that the writing is going to be the stand out piece of the whole film, and that is all that will be noticed.  Which is fine.

Her

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: Dallas Buyers Club – Movies are a cathartic social machine. Through movies we converse about the world around us. Dallas Buyers Club carries a weight of contemporary reflection. The film’s content is still too much of a hot button to win, but a nomination from the academy will at least provide the film a larger viewership. Dallas Buyers Club is a character study via the performance of Mathew McConaughey delivering a tremendous emotional impact. Film should be conversational by nature and Dallas Buyers Club will keep people talking beyond its release.

 Dallas Buyers Club

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: American Hustle.  The hype is there, and waiting.  Not much else to be said.  There were far too many big named actors in this film for them to take a whole lot, but I see this one taking the cake, as well as a the ladies sweeping it, Russell will have his day, and maybe a scattered win somewhere else.  Just 5 total, but the two biggest ones of all, of course.

American Hustle

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: 12 Years A Slave.  The British director Steve McQueen addresses human struggle aligned with human created institutions. McQueen’s first two films Hunger (2008) and Shame (2011) exemplifies this theme. In the 21-century American Slavery is whispered as a forgotten forced echoing a past we collectively tell ourselves is no longer relevant. Racism was my father’s father and not me. Unlike last year’s nominee Django Unchained (2012), which also addressed American Slavery but rather through genera storytelling, 12 Years A Slave removes as much of genera storytelling’s laughs and winks for a realistic depiction of struggle. 12 Years A Slave captures our echo amplifying it back reminding us struggle is deeper than the institutions which implemented them.

12 Years A Slave

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role

…And the nominees are:

Christian Bale for American Hustle

Bruce Dern for Nebraska

Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street

Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave

Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street.  I don’t think the Academy wants to except Leo, until he is on the Academy himself.  But, it is definitely due time, and what better acceptance speech could be done than Leo thanking Marty for putting him in all of his damn movies!

THe Wolf of Wall Street

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club – It has always been fun to watch Matthew McConaughey playing Matthew McConaughey in movies, the man has a charisma that catches the attention of a  room. In recent films such as Mud (2012) and the current Dallas Buyers Club McConaughey is still able to use his southern charm but in these films to the advantage of the story and character. The “Hollywoodness” of the Matthew McConaughey celebrity falls away leaving a very personal character driven performance.

Dallas Buyers Club

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years A Slave.  Once again, when an actor is nominated for a role in which he is the primary suspect of the entire film, it’s pretty much his.  It’s the Forrest Gump stigma, if you will.

12 Years A Slave

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street – Leonardo DiCaprio has countless great performances and nominations without receiving an Academy win. Martin Scorsese and DiCaprio are very closely linked in their films but also in regards to nominations without statutes. As the Academy finally honored Scorsese with the Departed (2006) as an apology to all his previous overlook nomination, DiCaprio will be honored this go around for his performance in The Wolf of Wall Street. The win for The Departed and the win for DiCaprio are deserving on their own merit regardless of the nomination context.

P.S. – I am still bitter over the lack of supporting nomination for DiCaprio in Django Unchained last year.

THe Wolf of Wall Street

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role

…And the nominees are

Amy Adams for American Hustle

Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine

Sandra Bullock for Gravity

Judi Dench for Philomena

Meryl Streep for August: Osage County

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Cate Blanchett.  Not only do I want Mia Farrow to choke on her own vomit when she sees another female win an award for a portrayal in one of Woody’s films, also I really enjoyed Cate’s performance, which is rare because I see no greatness in her.  And I am biased in wanting Woody Allen’s films to win EVERYTHING.  If the man believe in special effects, his films should win that too!

Blue Jasmine

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: Amy Adams for American Hustle.  See below.

American Hustle

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Amy Adams for American Hustle.  The Academy seems to want to show praise for “strong female leads” or “fish out of water, woman in a man’s world”.  While Cate Blanchett was great, she showed too much weakness.  Under normal pretenses, Dench or Streep would be the more obvious choice, but young Amy Adams is lacking a trophy as a lead actress.  Which is enough for me to make this prediction.

American Hustle

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  Amy Adams for American Hustle – Amy Adams has five supporting actress nomination with zero wins. This is her first leading actress nomination. Adams has selected very diverse roles ranging from Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) to Paul Thomas Anderson’s character driven The Master (2012) leaving no doubt of her mastering of both comedy and drama. Adams is one of the best actress of the current generation standing out from the slightly disappointing American Hustle. This nomination is about performance and Amy Adams should win.

American Hustle

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role

…And the nominees are:

Barkhad Abdi for Captain Phillips

Bradley Cooper for American Hustle

Michael Fassbender for 12 Years A Slave

Jonah Hill for The Wolf of Wall Street

Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Jonah Hill for The Wolf of Wall Street.  C’mon, now!  This guy has had lines in comedy films about literally beating dicks until the fall off, and taking a shit on top of a pile of pubes and watching it look like a stuffed animal.  Now he has two Oscar nominations?  Too wonderful!

THe Wolf of Wall Street

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: Michael Fassbender for 12 Years A Slave – This is my list and I have biases. I love Michael Fassbender and want him to win. His performance is deserving regardless of my bias.

12 Years A Slave

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Jonah Hill for The Wolf of Wall Street.  How can the Academy get away with honoring a Scorsese film without giving him an actual Oscar -and- stir up some shit by giving the man who in the same year had a demon do some “not so chill” things to him in another film?  Boom.  It’s math.  Dirty psychological math.

THe Wolf of Wall Street

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  Barkhad Abdi for Captain Phillips – This is my cynical card this year. Captain Phillips is Barkhad Abdi first film anything and he also puts a strong performance to screen. A nomination in principle should purely be about being the best regardless of any surrounding context – the best male supporting actor of 2013. The Academy has its own context such as Haley Joel Osment for The Sixth Sense (1999) and Gabourey Sidibe for Precious (2009). Although this precedent is nominations and not wins. In this case believing most of the voting is going to others films this might be a win for the Captain Phillip’s DVD cover.

Captain Phillips

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role

…And the nominees are:

Sally Hawkins for Blue Jasmine

Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle

Lupita Nyong’o for 12 Years a Slave

Julia Roberts for August: Osage County

June Squibb for Nebraska

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Sally Hawkins for Blue Jasmine.  As previously stated, it’s all about the Woody.  And since The Dice Man wasn’t nominated for a supporting actor award as once anticipated, Hawkins might as well take home the gold.

Blue Jasmine

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: June Squibb for Nebraska.  See Below.

Nebraska

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Jennifer Lawrence.  Everyone adores this chick, and I can see why.  I may not think she is truly the cat’s pajamas everyone else does, I am almost 100% certain on this one.  It’s, you know, whatever.  At least she’s not Kristen Stewart.  I think Lawrence has like three facial expressions.

American Hustle

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: June Squibb for Nebraska – Okay, this is my second cynical reasoning claim. Nebraska needs a win, and this will be the nomination. Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle might be the upset for the same reasoning but my bet is on June.

Nebraska

Best Achievement in Directing

…And the nominees are:

David O. Russell for American Hustle

Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity

Alexander Payne for Nebraska

Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave

Martin Scorsese for The Wolf of Wall Street

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: David O. Russell for American Hustle.  Normally I would be all about Marty taking it home, but Russell was essentially robbed last year, and I think he has earned his title as Oscar winner.  And honestly, The Wolf of Wall Street was probably one of the most “O.K.” films I have seen from Marty since Hugo, and for that, I don’t know, After Hours?

American Hustle

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN:  Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity – From a technical perspective Gravity is a visual masterpiece, a film that needs to be seen on a 90 foot screen as not even a home theater 70 inch LED will justify the scale of this work. In defining terms what constitutes being a Best Director? Is Best Director about forming the best story, is it composing the best emotional reaction, is it getting great performances from the talent, is it a combination of everything? In defining my terms no other director this year was able to fashion an environment for the creation of such beautiful imagery progressing visual storytelling and pushing the bounds of filmmaking into new technical grounds.

Gravity

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: David O. Russell.  I don’t believe this is going to be a year where the director nod and best feature are separate.  Then again, I didn’t think it would be last year.  So, what the hell do I know?  Why are you really reading this crap?  Oh that’s right, we are giving away free shit on Facebook.

American Hustle

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  Steve McQueen for 12 Years A Slave – Hunger (2009) and Shame (2011) from Steve McQueen are highly revered for their cinematic humanistic qualities. As Best Picture goes, usually Best Director follows. For this, and the deeper emotional impact of 12 Years A Slave as previously stated, Best Director will go to Steve McQueen. I’m okay with this win. His movies are hard to watch, but represent the highest echelon of filmmaking.

12 Years A Slave

Best Writing, Original Screenplay

…And the nominees are:

Eric Warren Singer and David O. Russell for American Hustle

Woody Allen for Blue Jasmine

Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack for Dallas Buyers Club

Spike Jonze for Her

Bob Nelson for Nebraska

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Woody Allen for Blue Jasmine.  This is a real toss up.  While I would love to see Spike Jonze have his day, my ridiculous obsession with Woody has to stop me.  I do believe that Her was better than Blue Jasmine.  But they were very different.  I just want the guy who nevers goes to the Oscars to win the most Oscars ever, and he doesn’t have enough years to catch up to Walt Disney, but dammit lets get close!

Blue Jasmine

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN:  Spike Jonze for Her – Her is a very modern film. Spike Jonze is a very modern filmmaker. With a lot of nominations behind him, this becomes the year Spike Jonze wins an Oscar. Her was a good film too.

Her

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: David O. Russell for American Hustle.  Like I said, it’s time for David to slay his Goliath, and get the title of Oscar winner that he probably pretends to not care about.

American Hustle

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: See above.

Her

Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay

…And the nominees are:

Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy, and Ethan Hawke for Before Midnight

Billy Ray for Captain Phillips

Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope for Philomena

John Ridley for 12 Years a Slave

Terence Winter for The Wolf of Wall Street

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy, and Ethan Hawke for Before Midnight.  I am almost certain this won’t happen, but this triangle of great folks really deserve this award.  As a great admirer of the 90’s, Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke are phenomenal in my adoring eyes.  Although, for different reasons, seeing Steve Coogan win would be great too.

Before Midnight

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: Terence Winter for the Wolf of Wall Street – It is hard to figure out what The Wolf of Wall Street actually is in terms of classification. It’s hard to believe this “Comedy” is an adaptation of real person Jordan Belfort memoirs. The Wolf of Wall Street is still a film with entertainment as part of its form and such not necessarily an adaptation of historical fact. As much as this film makes me smile I think it’s too loud and filled with pop culture and not enough Independent to win. Cynicalness pokes it’s head up again.

THe Wolf of Wall Street

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: John Ridley for 12 Years A Slave.  Two words: White Guilt.  Well deserved white guilt I might add.  As genuine of a gesture as I believe it NOT to be, I don’t think the risk of not honoring the true story of an enslaved man by awarding the adaptation of his true story and the portrayal by the man who took his life to the screen, is one that they should really avoid.

12 Years A Slave

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  John Ridley for 12 Years A Slave – For many of the same reasons already stated. The audience loves a true story and we love to see struggles caped with overcoming – it’s the hero’s journey and the content is right next to the American Heart even though we deny both most times.

 12 Years A Slave

Best Achievement in Cinematography

…And the nominees are:

Philippe Le Sourd for The Grandmaster

Emmanuel Lubezki for Gravity

Bruno Delbonnel for Inside Llewyn Davis

Phedon Papamichael for Nebraska

Roger Deakins for Prisoners

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Bruno Delbonnel for Inside Llewyn Davis.  I am rather shocked that this is the only appearance of a Coen Brothers film this year.  As most of us should, the Academy has an obvious hard on these two brilliant filmmakers, yet here they are in just two categories, both of which omit the Coen name.  Personally, I just want any film besides Gravity to win.

Inside Llewyn Davis

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN:  See below.

Gravity

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Emmanuel Lubezki for Gravity.  I can only let out a sigh on this one.  Such horseshit.  Just as they did last year with that extremely festering pile of dung that was Life of Pi, I really think that the green screen is going to win once again.  I don’t mean to hate on this new fan dangled age of digital and green screened all to hell ways of doing business, but I still call bullshit.  And to be fair, Life of Pi was awful.  And I believe many cinematographers are losing their creative edge to a god damned MacBook, and that isn’t cool.

Gravity

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  Emmanuel Lubezki for Gravity – All the films nominated are beautifully shot but it is Gravity that pushes the envelope is visual storytelling. No other film has done what Gravity has done in moving filmmaking into the 21 century of digital creation. As the point going forward, brought up by my dear friend Ron, what constitutes a composition now with so much post production add on? Emmanuel Lubezki has 10 nominations and no wins. This is the DP that shot Children of Men (2006) and Tree of Life (2011) which had almost no CGI and I want this win.

Gravity

Best Achievement in Costume Design

…And the nominees are:

Michael Wilkinson for American Hustle

William Chang for The Grandmaster

Catherine Martin for The Great Gatsby

Michael O’Connor for The Invisible Woman

Patricia Norris for 12 Years a Slave

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Catherine Martin for The Great Gatsby.  Although I didn’t really dig a 3D, hip hop infused reanimation of one of my favorite books as much I thought I would, they were dressed to a goddamned T!  Martin got the costumes down as well as they were when Redford played Jay.

The Great Gatsby

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: Catherine Martin for The Great Gatsby.  See below.

The Great Gatsby

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Catherine Martin for The Great Gatsby.  I have faith, I think it can be done.  I can only see this going wrong if the judges decide to hand over a give away award to American Hustle, which is not too far out in left field to consider.

The Great Gatsby

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  Catherine Martin for The Great Gatsby – The Great Gatsby has fashion sense and a look that gives theme in the pursuit of storytelling. There are costumes and then there are costumes.

The Great Gatsby

Best Achievement in Sound Mixing

…And the nominees are:

Chris Burdon, Mark Taylor, Mike Prestwood Smith, and Chris Munro for Captain Phillips

Skip Lievsay, Niv Adiri, Christopher Benstead, and Chris Munro for Gravity

Christopher Boyes, Michael Hedges, Michael Sernanick, and Tony Johnson for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Skip Lievsay, Greg Orloff, and Peter F. Kurland for Inside Llewyn Davis

Andy Koyama, Beau Borders, and David Brownlow for Lone Survivor

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Skip Lievsay, Greg Orloff, and Peter F. Kurland for Inside Llewyn Davis.  I couldn’t even pretend to know what is involved with sound mixing, so I will just pick the Coen Brothers.  Done.

Inside Llewyn Davis

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN:  Andy Koyama, Beau Borders, and David Brownlow for Lone Survivor.  See below.

Lone Survivor

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Chris Burdon, Mark Taylor, Mike Prestwood Smith, and Chris Munro for Captain Phillips

Captain Phillips

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  Andy Koyama, Beau Borders, and David Brownlow for Lone Survivor – War has a lot of sounds. Visual keeps an audiences’ attention but it is sound which gives cinema its soul. Lone Survivor has elements of brother-in-arms quiet intimacy but this film is not a dramatic conversational piece. Through the arrangements of the sound mixing emotional heart strings are pulled through the achievement of the mixers’ ability.

Lone Survivor

Best Achievement in Film Editing

…And the nominees are:

Jay Cassidy, Crispin Struthers, and Alan Baumgarten for American Hustle

Christopher Rouse for Captain Phillips

Jean Marc Vallee and Martin Pensa for Dallas Buyers Club

Alfonso Cuaron and Mark Sanger for Gravity

Joe Walker for 12 Years a Slave

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Jay Cassidy, Crispin Struthers, and Alan Baumgarten for American Hustle.  I don’t really have any opinion on this, I am just so convinced that American Hustle is going to take the cake, and I’m not real concerned to begin with.

American Hustle

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: Christopher Rouse for Captain Phillips.  See below.

Captain Phillips

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Jay Cassidy, Crispin Struthers, and Alan Baumgarten for American Hustle.  I always think that the editing award and best picture award should be together, right?  That’s my rationale anyway.

American Hustle

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  Christopher Rouse for Captain Phillips – Editing is the strongest piece of Captain Phillips taking a story we kind of already know the ending giving it an intensity of feeling like maybe we don’t know how it will turn out even though we still kind of do. This tension strives from the power of the editing. It’s hard for an editor on Gravity to win with Alfonso Cuaron giving you 17 minute single shots to work with. Captain Phillips deserves this win.

 Captain Phillips

Best Achievement in Sound Editing

…And the nominees are:

Steve Boeddeker and Richard Hymns for All Is Lost

Oliver Tarney for Captain Phillips

Glenn Freemantle for Gravity

Brent Burge for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Wylie Stateman for Lone Survivor

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Oliver Tarney for Captain Phillips.  I don’t know, I just don’t want Gravity to win a damn thing.

Captain Phillips

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN:  Glenn Freemantle for Gravity – There is no sound is space, kind of. It’s the quiet of this film that adds so much more to the experience. Quiet is not silence and creating quiet is very hard to pull off.

Gravity

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Glenn Freemantle for Gravity.  I guess if you treat a film like a video game, you can have the technical shit.

Gravity

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  Wylie Stateman for Lone Survivor – For the same reasons as to winning Sound Mixing.

Lone Survivor

Best Achievement in Visual Effects

…And the nominees are:

Timothy Webber, Chris Lawrence, David Shirk, and Neil Corbould for Gravity

Joe Letteri, Eric Saindon, David Clayton, and Eric Reynolds for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Christopher Townsend, Guy Williams, Erik Nash, and Daniel Sudick for Iron Man 3

Tim Alexander, Gary Brozenich, Edson Williams, and John Frazier for The Lone Ranger

Roger Guyett, Pat Tubach, Ben Grossman, and Burt Dalton for Star Trek Into Darkness

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Joe Letteri, Eric Saindon, David Clayton, and Eric Reynolds for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.  It’s not Gravity.  And it’s based on classic literature.  Why not?

The Hobbit

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN:  Timothy Webber, Chris Lawrence, David Shirk, and Neil Corbould for Gravity – Gravity does not have a spectacular over the top or world building level of visual effects which other films offer but it does possess the technical achievement of pushing the boundaries of possibilities in storytelling. Gravity creates a seamless realism that disbands especial effect disbelief. All the wires are hidden.

Gravity

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Timothy Webber, Chris Lawrence, David Shirk, and Neil Corbould for Gravity.  Whatever.

Gravity

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  Joe Letteri, Eric Saindon, David Clayton, and Eric Reynolds for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – Middle Earth is a beautiful world. But, I’ve been there before and have already seen this place. LOTR needs a win, and the film looks great. Thumbs up!

 The Hobbit

Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling

…And the nominees are:

Adruitha Lee and Robin Matthews for Dallas Buyers Club

Steve Prouty for Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa

Joel Harlow and Gloria Pasqua Casny for The Lone Ranger

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Steve Prouty for Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa.  I know that Dallas Buyers Club should be the right answer, but I love the idea of the Jackass guys being Oscar winners, even if I am not really a fan.

Bad Grandpa

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: Adruitha Lee and Robin Matthews for Dallas Buyers Club.  See below.

Dallas Buyers Club

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Adruitha Lee and Robin Matthews for Dallas Buyers Club.  There just really is no other realistic option.

Dallas Buyers Club

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  Adruitha Lee and Robin Matthews for Dallas Buyers Club – Matthew McConaughey lost a lot of weight for his role. This was a partial reason for McConaughey’s Oscar winning performance. Weight loss can only go so far. The makeup department is so important to storytelling but so under appreciated by the film going crowds. I was sold that McConaughey was dying from Aids which gave me a very strong connection to the film. This was in part to the great makeup of Dallas Buyers Club.

Dallas Buyers Club

Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song

…And the nominees are:

Pharrell Williams for Despicable Me 2, “Happy”

Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for Frozen, “Let It Go”

Karen O for Her, “The Moon Song”

Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, “Ordinary Love”

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for Frozen, “Let It Go”. The phenomenon of this song has hit my home personally.  My kids absolutely adore the entire Frozen soundtrack.  And they are blissfully unaware that such a phenomenon is happening, although they are definitely a part of it all.  So for them, I choose this extremely annoying song in hopes that it goes away very soon.

Frozen

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN:  Pharrell Williams for Despicable Me 2, “Happy” – I have a soft spot for Pharrell. I like the Despicable Me movies. I’ll remember the Pharrell song longer than the U2 song.

Despicable Me 2

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for Frozen, “Let It Go”.  It’s just too damn big.  Enough said.

Frozen

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, “Ordinary Love” – It’s U2 with an original song for a Nelson Mandela film in a year Nelson Mandela past away. This is easier than the Adele song for Skyfall. This is my free spot on Bingo.

Mandela

Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score

…And the nominees are:

John Williams for The Book Thief

Steven Price for Gravity

Will Butler and Owen Pallett for Her

Alexandre Desplat for Philomena

Thomas Newman for Saving Mr. Banks

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Thomas Newman for Saving Mr. Banks.  Because I would simply have to shut down my Facebook account if the kids from Arcade Fire win an Oscar.

Saving Mr. Banks

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: Thomas Newman for Saving Mr. Banks.  See below.

Saving Mr. Banks

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Thomas Newman for Saving Mr. Banks.  Nobody should want Arcade Fire to win an Oscar.

Saving Mr. Banks

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  Thomas Newman for Saving Mr. Banks – Music is so important to film. Music in film existed before movies had sound. Thomas Newman’s score for Saving Mr. Banks is what holds the film together. Comedic moments to personal reflective conversations, the score keeps the emotions moving and an interest in the film. Being about Walt Disney, best music score seems fitting.

 Saving Mr. Banks

Best Short Film, Animated

Daniel Sousa and Dan Golden for Feral

Lauren MacMullan and Dorothy McKim for Get a Horsel

Feral

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN:  Daniel Sousa and Dan Golden for Feral – See below.

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Daniel Sousa and Dan Golden for Feral.  To use the unofficial military acronym, this is a “WAG” (Wild Ass Guess).

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: Jeffrey Karoff for Cavedigger –  See below.

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Edgar Barens for Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall. Again…I know Barens!  And he is great!

Prison Terminal

Best Documentary, Features

…And the nominees are:

Joshua Oppenheimer and Signe Byrge Sorenson for The Act of Killing

Zachary Heinzerling and Lydia Dean Pilcher for Cutie and the Boxer

Rick Rowley and Jeremy Scahill for Dirty Wars

Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer for The Square

Morgan Neville, Gil Friesen, and Caitrin Rogers for 20 Feet from Stardom

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Morgan Neville, Gil Friesen, and Caitrin Rogers for 20 Feet from Stardom.  This was a really cool film.  Maybe not as socially important as the others, but hell, Searching for Sugar Man won last year!  Which I loved, but didn’t see that coming!

Twenty Feet From Stardom

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: Joshua Oppenheimer and Signe Byrge Sorenson for The Act of Killing – The Act of Killing shook me up quite a bit. The film is about anti-communist purging from Indonesian between 65-66 resulting in 500,000 killed. The cold war and communists was never a part of my generation as thus I feel removed from that “communist” fear. What The Act of Killing does is address a very fundamental motivation of why people kill and the journey of a person who was caught up in those moments who years later discovers another very humanistic characteristic that is for each individual viewer to figure out for themselves.

The Act of Killing

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Morgan Neville, Gil Friesen, and Caitrin Rogers for 20 Feet from Stardom.  Here’s to hoping we get two musical years in a row!

Twenty Feet From Stardom

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer for The Square – Egypt continues to be a center pillar of geopolitics. The Square’s story is still developing. In this moment The Square will win, and should be seen, but The Act of Killing is about humanist characters and maybe more long term relative.

The Square

Best Foreign Language Film of the Year

…And the nominees are:

The Broken Circle Breakdown (Belgium)

The Great Beauty (Italy)

The Hunt (Denmark)

The Missing Picture (Cambodia)

Omar (Palestine)

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: The Hunt (Denmark).  I heart Denmark.

The Hunt

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: See below.

Broken Circle Break Down

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Omar (Palestine).  Controversy sells.  And probably with good reason.

Omar

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN:  The Broken Circle Breakdown (Belgium) – Here is where my bullshit comes through. I haven’t seen any of these films. With that said, this is my choice and all of these choice are so subjective. These are all good, well maybe most, but it’s only time which decides what films are great.

Broken Circle Break Down

Best Animated Feature

…And the nominees are:

Chris Sanders, kirk De Micco, and Kristine Belson for The Croods

Chris Renaud, Pierre Coffin, and Christopher Meledandri for Despicable Me 2

Benjamine Renner and Didier Brunner for Ernest & Celestine

Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee, and Peter Del Vecho for Frozen

Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki for The Wind Rises

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee, and Peter Del Vecho for Frozen.  See the above “Let it Go” argument.

Frozen

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN:  Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki for The Wind Rises – This is Hayao Miyazaki final film of a very long groundbreaking career. This film is deserving of the win even though it has the least amount of notoriety in the states. Hayao will receive a lifetime achievement award in the coming years but an Oscar for this film would be a much better result. I don’t actually think The Wind Rises will win but I won’t cheapen it by moving this section into the wants to win category.

Wind Rises

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee, and Peter Del Vecho for Frozen.  See the above “Let it Go” argument.

Frozen

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: See above.

Wind Rises

Best Achievement in Production Design

…And the nominees are:

Judy Becker and Heather Loeffler for American Hustle

Andy Nicholson, Rosie Goodwin, and Joanne Woollard for Gravity

Catherine Martin and Beverley Dunn for The Great Gatsby

K.K. Barrett and Gene Serdena for Her

Adam Stockhausen and Alice Baker for 12 Years a Slave

WHO RON WANTS TO WIN: Catherine Martin and Beverley Dunn for The Great Gatsby.  I thought this was actually the greatest part of the film.

The Great Gatsby

WHO CHRIS WANTS TO WIN: Catherine Martin and Beverley Dunn for The Great Gatsby.  See below.

The Great Gatsby

WHO RON THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Judy Becker and Heather Loeffler for American Hustle.  Seriously, if Gravity wins this shit, I am going to shun George Clooney, and shit in Sandra Bullock’s empty skull.

American Hustle

WHO CHRIS THINKS WILL ACTUALLY WIN: Catherine Martin and Beverley Dunn for The Great Gatsby – The Great Gatsby is an interesting film that I have returned to a few times. It’s not a greatest achievement in film but the choices I still find interesting and it is in this regard The Great Gatsby has some staying power. As part of those choice the Production Design is fundamentally terrific.

The Great Gatsby

Trainwreck’d Society’s Person of 2013: Alexander Hallett [Exclusive]

Alex3When it came to choosing this year’s Person of Year I have to admit, I think I chose them very early on in the year.  Yes, there were a few contenders to pour in later, but I think I always had my heart set on this guy.  Sir Alexander Hallett.

I first came to know Alex almost five years ago when I was writing primarily for Fensepost.com under the wing of the wise and talented Andrew Fenstermaker.  Fensepost wasn’t known for its inclusion of hip hop music in its then twice daily music posts.  But, Fense knew I was a fan of “alternative” hip hop, so he passed along a request from an artist named Alexipharmic.  The name alone intrigued me, as I could hardly figure out how to say it.  I remember listening to one of his many  Good Side of Bad volumes at a little breakfast nook in a temporary home when I first moved to Spokane, WA.  I was absolutely blown away.  At this point in my life, my resignation of listening to the hip hop world was almost in full effect, but I was always holding on.  In fact I am certain that Alex only found me because I had recently done my first ever hip hop album review for one of comrades, John Overlie a.k.a. Grynch.  And thus the story of how I have come to know and become in awe of Alexander Hallett began.

Years later, Alex would change his staged name to Bodi.  Which was a name that I would also butcher for a while before hearing it pronounced right (It’s Bo-Dee).  And he continued to make beautiful songs and perform across the country.  His strength in lyrics has always been a high selling point for his work for me, and he still manages to grow with every song he throws down.  The point where Alex truly became a dear friend of mine (although, we have never actually met, but one day!) was in the earliest part of 2011 when I was working on a charity based

Alex and Michael "Eyedea" Larsen

Alex and Michael “Eyedea” Larsen

collective works book entitled Children of Mercy: Tales and Teachings From The World of Independent Music.  It was a collection of essays by some of the fine folks I have managed to get to know in the independent music world.  And Alex wrote one of the dearest, most heart-felt essays that paid tribute to the near recent passing of one of his friends/idols, Michael “Eyedea” Larsen, a man whose rise to fame was obvious with a bustling career and large fan base, but was sadly cut short at a young age.  Alex’s brilliant words about Michael led me to decide that COM had to be dedicated in his honor.  I am eternally grateful that Alex was so willing, and practically eager, to help out with this project.

So, that is how I know him.  I know that is a long-winded explanation of two people meeting, without actually meeting, for an article that is supposed to be about the great things somebody did in a certain year, not about essays and music released 3-5 years ago.  So here we go:  Whenever I think of how to describe Alexander Hallet, there is always one simple word that comes to mind.  Selfless.

As some of you may know, Bodi topped the end of year lists this year here at TWS.  His single “Clotho” came in as our #2 favorite song of the year, and his album The Fall of Atlas came in as our #1 favorite album.  Yes, it was that damn good, I will recommend it to everyone out there who says hip hop is dead (but that is a whole other can of worms to open).  It was not only my favorite album of the year, it will certainly be a contender throughout the rest of my days as, “one of the greatest” I have ever heard.  But, it isn’t just Alex’s talents as Bodi that make him so special.  Let’s go on

The album was released last 1. Bodi - The Fall of AtlasFebruary, and two days later Alex hit the road.  Only Alex wasn’t going on tour to promote his latest and greatest efforts.  No, the artist known as Bodi was setting off on what he would call The Volunteer Adventure.  I don’t know about you, but heading to an orphanage outside of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is about the strangest way to promote an album release I have ever heard of.  Of course, this brings us back to the big word.  Selfless.  And Alex was not just headed to Vietnam for a week to help out, the man set out on an entire year of volunteering across the globe!  This cat also spent a month to two months in Cambodia, Nepal, Kenya, South Africa, Romania, Colombia, and Peru.  All the while, lending whatever services were needed from him.  Even as I type these words, I find it completely astonishing and breathtaking just how much of himself Alex gave up for almost an entire year to help those less fortunate than himself.  In fact, I am beginning to wonder if the world “Selfless” just isn’t enough.

IMG_2279What is most peculiar about Alex taking this adventure really is just how NOT surprised I, and certainly others, were to hear that Alex would do such a thing.  He has always been a charitable lad.  Since his inception as a hip hop artist, he has donated at least 50% of any proceeds he receives to one great cause or another.  He has already been to Kenya in the years prior to this volunteer adventure, which was probably what sparked his interest in moving about the earth once again.  Those who know and love Alex, surely understand all of these things, and have to be even more proud of him than I am.  I’m just a blogger with a little website I like to use to talk about my friends.  And when I know somebody like this, it is such a privilege to attempt to honor him in any way possible.

And like we always do, we felt it was necessary to invite some of Alex’s friends to join in on the fun and tell us why exactly Alex deserves this nomination, and probably even more recognition than he will ever deserve.  I may have already stolen the thunder from some of the contributors in the previous text, but let it be known that these are HIS friends he has, in some form or another worked with or knows personally.  And it truly solidifies the fact that Alex is just a great person, and a prime example of how more people should be.  Just about everyone who knows Alex, even those not featured below, will surely tell you that he is without a doubt one of the kindest souls you may ever have the great fortune of knowing, hearing about, or simply passing by on the street.

Thank you Alex for your contributions in music that we so adore, and especially for contributions to the world.  You are a beautiful man.

IMG_0123Megan Herdeman (Girlfriend)

Alex is, without question, the most incredible, selfless, compassionate and inspiring man I have ever met. He is always working to make himself, others, and the world better, and does it with more grace and unwavering positivity than I could have imagined. I have spent a lot of time with Alex, and have seen first hand the impact he has on everyone and every thing he touches, always leaving things in a better place than how he found them. What he’s doing now is maybe his greatest feat yet, and it’s incredible for me to know and witness him changing lives across the globe. I am incredibly fortunate to be able to have been a part of it with him. He has become the change he wants to see in the world, and I am so proud of that. He deserves for every dream to come true, and I think being recognized for the amazing and hard work he is doing is a great start.

ThinxxWesley de la Hunt (hip hop artist, Thinxx)

I know Alex through hiphop and music. About 6 years ago I left a message on Grieves’ Myspace page and got a message from Alex saying if I like what Grieves is doing it’s quite possible that I’d like his stuff. So I checked it out and I really liked what I heard. We’ve been friends ever since and I actually never met him in person till a few months ago but meeting him was as if we’d known each other for ages.

I think Alex deserves the award because he has an unsatisfying desire to help people, whether it’s through his music or his album sales(of which he has always given half to charity) or his volunteer work we’re he gives himself tirelessly. I don’t know of too many people, firstly with this type of commitment and then the actual desire and drive to actually get up and do something. What he’s done over the years and this year in specific deems him well-worthy of this award in my eyes. He is changing people’s lives for the better and I have nothing but the utmost respect for that. So, thanks Alex.

EricAlexMerchEric Murphy (hip hop artist, Errol Hem)

I met Alex in May 2011 through mutual music friend Nicholas “Ordeal” Oliver when I opened for the Neverending Gun Show Tour in Chicago. I ended up spending the next four days/nights around the guys on the tour in IL, IA and MN (the final day of which was Soundset) and on the third night, at the tour’s Twin Cities stop at Honey, I mentioned to Alex that I was interested in touring myself. Two months later, I was on the road doing shows throughout the US West with him, Engineers in Your Ear and Doctype for two incredible weeks. Since this time, Alex and I keep in regular contact, discussing matters of life, continuing to collaborate on shows and musical efforts, and seasonally duking it out in fantasy football & basketball. In such a short amount of time, he has quickly become one of my very good friends and someone who I consider as close as family.

Jason PitmanJason Pitman (artist, lifelong friend)

Alex is one the most genuine and selfless people I’ve known in my life. He is the type of person to look out for the well-being of others over his own pleasure or satisfaction. Just look at what he’s been up to in 2013; living in and sharing his time, efforts and knowledge with young children in orphanages throughout the world for a full year. That alone makes Alex worthy of this nomination. I feel more than honored and privileged to be able to call him my friend and am always hoping for the best for him.

Alex and i have been friends since the 1st grade and haven’t looked back since. Through all the ups and downs, we have been best friends for over 20 years. Although we went to college in different states and subsequently lived in different areas for much of post college life, whenever we get a chance to hang out again, we slide back into the old routine, without ever skipping a beat. The mark of true friendship.

In my mind, there isn’t a more genuine or humble human being on the planet. while his trek around the globe helping those less fortunate is being seen by many people, away from that light, he is just as compassionate and helpful, if not more so. He has helped me through my greatest adversities and has been nothing but supportive in my dreams and abilities. He puts others needs above his and doesn’t hesitate to drop his own plans if someone is in trouble, whether that person is a stranger or someone close to him. I could spend a long time writing all the things that make the man special and deserving of this honor. When it comes down to it, there aren’t many people in the world as selfless and genuine as him. People are lucky to hear his passion and drive through his music. I am beyond lucky to call him my friend.

Kyle RichardsonKyle Richardson (musician, Engineers In Your Ears)

Alex may be the most genuine and kind-hearted soul I have ever met.  This guy has inspired me in my life more than words can explain.  He carries thoughtful heart into any project he does and strives to make the world a better place by helping others.  He is an amazing humanitarian and a great friend.  The first day I met Alex in person, he drove from Colorado to Arizona to kick off a Tour we planned through long-distance social media communications.  We traveled to many cities as complete strangers and eventually grew to be great friends.  During the trip Alex made it a point to take us to some of the most amazing places and even took us into his home where we met his Father and Step-mother.  I can see where he gets his kindness from, as his parents are also wonderful people.  Alex is always traveling the world offering a helping hand in less-fortunate communities.  He has literally improved the quality of life for entire villages.  Alex is proof that there are still amazing people in this world and I feel blessed to call him my friend.

Krysta Rayford
Krysta Rayford (musician, K.Raydio)
I met Alex through another artist, my mentor M.anifest. M.anifest (yes, with a period) had told me about a very passionate, creative artist named Bodi and how he really works to connect art and social change. I work as an Artist Educator for Face Forward, a group in Minnesota, and was contacted by Alex via email a few months after learning about his work. He asked me to be a part of his project, The Fall of Atlas, and I was taken aback by his warmth and brilliance.  Alex is worthy of this nomination because he truly is a person that encapsulates a good, admirable human being. He is so genuine about doing work to help benefit other people. In the music industry, it is rare to find someone who cares more about others than they do about themselves. Alex is that person.

Bryan RodeckerBryan Rodecker (hip hop artist, Infidelix)

I know Alex throughout the hip hop community and tour scene. He stayed at my house while passing through Denton Tx on tour with Kristoff Krane and Sadistik and Ordeal. Since then we have kept in touch via facebook and he has been an inspiration to my upcoming journey that I will be going on.  He is worthy of the nomination because he does one thing that most people don’t do. He actually follows through with what he says. To much in life people say they are gonna do something, or dream about doing something and this dude actually did it. He changes peoples lives man in all his projects. There are not to many genuine people out there anymore and he is a great example of one that still shines.

AlexCasOneJacob Snider (hip hop artist, Cas One)

I know Alex through music but I better know Alex by becoming his friend through music. We have toward several times together and I couldn’t ask for a more trust worthy and responsible person to spend time out in the wild with. Alex is selfless. Without a doubt the most compassionate and caring individual I have ever met. His empathy is without bound. He is the type of person you immediately know you can trust. He volunteers most of his years for the needy and when he is not volunteering he is working and saving so that he can go back out to volunteer all over again. Selfless. He wouldn’t only give you the shirt off of his back he would also give you his last meal. Alex isn’t worthy of this nomination. Alex is the reason this kind of award can exist.

Eric WatsonEric Watson (hip hop artist, SimpleSteven)

I met Alex on the Never Ending Gun Show tour in 2011. He was performing as Bodi and I had the pleasure of getting an opening slot in my hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Alex and the crew stayed at my house for a couple of days before they had to leave for tier next show. I was impacted by how nice and approachable he is. Even now we keep in touch over the internet. Alex deserves this without a doubt. It’s hard enough maintaining a career in music without anything else; but then he takes 50% of the profit and donates it to charity?! That’s impressive. Most people keep all their money. And now he is sacrificing a year if his life to help others. Volunteering his time in orphanages all over the world. Honestly, Alex is one of the most compassionate and selfless people I know.

Anna-Lynne WilliamsAnna-Lynne Williams (musician, Lotte Kestner)

I met Alex through our mutual friend Cody Foster (Sadistik) a couple of years back. he asked me to sing on a song that was my favorite of his and i jumped at the chance. but it wasn’t until meeting him properly months later, and talking at length, sharing music back and forth, that i realized what a uniquely kind person he is, and then started to see how that had seeped into his rapping. i actually burst into tears once looking at the photos he had taken on some of his trips helping kids in third world countries. i hope that he has gained a lot from his recent travels and that many people have benefited from getting to meet him.

For those of you out there who just now discovering Alexander Hallett and his work, good for you.  And check out his website to learn even more!

With Friends Like These -or- Our Favorite Albums of 2013 [Exclusive]

friendslikethese copyIt has been a long, yet wonderful 2 1/2 years of existence for Trainwreck’d Society.  We have been showcasing some pretty amazing artists in the world of music, film, literature, art, etc.  In fact the entire intention of the formation of this site was to do just that.  We wanted to get together artists from many different backgrounds and forms to come together as one right here on these pages.  And I firmly believe that the lists below is a wonderful way to make this happen.

With Friends Like These – or- Our Favorite Albums of 2013 brings together folks who have been a part of the TWS family for a while, as well as invites new friends to join the team.  And by showcasing their choices for their favorite albums of the year, it really does prove that TWS has become a real melting point of creativity. Thankfully, we had help from the Craig Francis Music store, otherwise this task would of taken much longer. You will find so many different variations and genres of music showcased here by some very wonderful and talent people in their own right.  I stand firm when I say that the music industry, though seemingly bruised and battered to the common on looker, is NOT dead.  And one look at this list should prove to you that their are so many great artists out there, whether “mainstream” or “indie” that are being heard, and there is a plethora of great music to be heard if you are willing to hunt it down for yourself.

So, with that in mind, I present to you With Friends Like These -or- Our Favorite Albums of 2013.  Enjoy!

Note:  Albums with a * also appeared on Trainwreck’d Society’s Top 37 1/2 Albums of 2013.

Trainwreck’d Society’s Top 37 1/2 Albums of 2013 [Exclusive]

37halfcoverI know I say this every year but….what a year 2013 was!  We had a great bit of material up on the site for you fine readers this year.  It was especially a great year for the TWS Interview world.  We interviewed everyone from an Oscar Award winning screenwriter to the original April O’Neil from the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film.  From new school filmmakers making movies about YouTube and shit demons, to legendary filmmakers who have credited such amazing films involving everything from punk rock in Mormon country, Leonard Cohen, and the acclaimed Fokker series.  We even spoke with writers who have touched on everything from the acclaimed Chelsea Hotel during the 80’s and 90’s, to the obsessive compulsions of Alfred Hitchcock.  Yes, we indulged ourselves in the film and literary world quite immensely this year.  But, one of our main focuses will always be on music.  This is our bread, and the film and literary world is our butter.  We wouldn’t be worth a damn if it weren’t for so many fine folks out there spilling their guts through microphones in bedroom closets or glamorous studios with excellent fruit assortments.  Yes, we thrive to honor the masters of the song.

And it was another great year for music in 2013.  Things jumped off pretty quick, with many of the albums in our top ten being released in the first quarter of the year alone.  2013 happens to be one of the most peculiar years Trainwreck’d Society has ever tallied.  We have many folks returning from years past, some debut acts, even a couple of A-List celebrities with some great pipes and strumming abilities. I also broke one of the unspoken laws of year end lists, and included a film soundtrack that was simply too delightful to pass up.  Hip hop music had it’s strongest showing yet to add to the peculiarity.  It goes without saying, that this is one of the most diverse lists we have had to date.  So here it is folks!  I present to you Trainwreck’d Society’s Top 37 1/2 Albums of 2013.

Note: As per usual, the highlighted Artist and Album Titles will contain a link to a related article on the featured artist and/or album.  Enjoy!

Trainwreck’d Society’s Top 40 Songs of 2013 [Exclusive]

playa2013Feliz Ano Nuevo everybody, and greetings from Spain!  It’s long been the 1st for us over here, but for the rest of you just waking up from your up to late hangovers, and heavy thoughts of how impossible those new year resolutions you swore you were going to keep last night, I have a treat (or at least a fine distraction to check out before you “head to the gym”) for all of you!  Let us begin!

I have never been one for “singles”.  I love songs!  I grew to loving music in the mid to late 1990’s when the “one hit wonder”‘s were rampant.  Things are different now, just as they were different in the decades that precluded my time of Dog’s Eye View, Eagle Eye Cherry, or Soul Asylum listening times.  I understood, and still understand, the reason for “singles”, in an entirely promotional sense, and I imagine the concept is still alive today.  But in this age of being able to download exactly what you want, and discarding the rest, we no longer rely on clever marketing of single tracks as much as we rely on the sound a musician or band creates altogether.  Yes, this is debatable, and I may be wrong, but no one can stop me from thinking this at this precise second, not even myself.  What is even more strenuous on the soul is the immense amount of music that is at your fingertips these days.  There is just so much to listen to, it’s pretty intimidating.

Maybe that is why I have never done a list of my favorite songs for a year here at Trainwreck’d Society.  Like most of you out there, my “favorite song” probably changes quicker than the seasons of each year, so it seems ridiculous to try to make a list.  But, this might as well be a season for change.  So, I thought I would try something new, and create a list of we here at Trainwreck’d Society considered to be the best songs of 2013.  In all reality, many of these songs most likely appear on albums that will very likely appear on our Top 37 1/2 Albums of 2013 list coming soon.  But in this situation, we get to pay respect to some truly talented artists that may not end up in the year-end album list, but were still very amazing.  Of course, on the other side of the spectrum, our favorite albums may not have a track that makes it on this list.  Everything is subjective anyway, right?   And if I ever stopped pussy footing around and make a year-end list longer than 37 albums, all of these artist might make the list.  I guess I can’t break that all things Kevin Smith addicted attitude I have had for almost twenty years.

So with that being said, I am excited to present to you, Trainwreck’d Society’s Top 40 Songs of 2013!

Note: Artist and Song Titles that are highlighted will provide a link to any previous posts on our site featuring said artist.  Enjoy!
